All health professionals have a key role to play in safeguarding children and young people. Section 11 of the Children Act places a statutory duty on key people and bodies to make arrangements to safeguard and promote the Safeguarding Children imagewelfare of those they come into contact with.

These e-learning modules offer a clear and effective solution to achieve this aim and meet the National Workforce Competences.

The modules are broken down into short 30 minute learning sessions and are easily available to all learners whether at work or at home.

Level 1 – Introduction to Safeguarding Children and Young People:

This is aimed at non-clinical staff working in health care settings.  It covers the knowledge and competencies required for Level 1 Safeguarding; recognition of the four categories of abuse and the appropriate actions healthcare staff need to take if they are concerned a child is being abused or neglected.

Level 2 – Recognition, Response and Record:

This is the minimum level required for clinical staff who have some degree of contact with children and young people and/or parents/carers.  It follows on from Level 1, covering Level 2 knowledge and competencies; recognising child abuse, being able to document cause for concern, knowing who to inform and understanding how to take appropriate action.

There is a primary care and a secondary care version available, reflecting the different safeguarding situations that can arise in each context; learners are advised to select the course which is most relevant to their working environment.

Level 3 – Maintaining and Updating Competences:

Maintaining and Updating Competences (MaUC) is aimed at Consultant doctors and career grade Paediatricians.  The module is made up of seven case-based learning sessions that cover the knowledge and competencies required for Level 3 Safeguarding. Those participating in this training should complete the introductory session which allows them to design an ongoing training programme suitable to their needs. This may involve a mixture of further sessions from the Maintaining and Updating Competences programme, face-to-face learning and supervision, local and national courses.
